According to a traditional legend, there once lived a mighty demon named Kalakarmukha (also referred to as Karakal in some regional traditions). He had eleven faces and performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma.
Pleased with his devotion, Lord Brahma appeared before him and asked him to request a boon. The demon initially sought immortality, but Brahma explained that immortality could not be granted. He then asked for a unique boon: that only someone who assumed an eleven-faced form on the anniversary of his birth would be able to kill him. Lord Brahma granted this request.
Empowered by this boon, Kalakarmukha became arrogant and began terrorizing the gods and sages. He defeated the celestial armies and spread fear throughout the three worlds. Unable to stop him, the gods approached Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu replied that He was already present on Earth in the form of Lord Rama and advised the gods to seek Lord Rama's guidance. The gods then approached Lord Rama and explained the crisis.
Lord Rama declared that only Hanuman, the remover of all difficulties (Sankat Mochan), could defeat the demon. At His command, Hanuman immediately appeared before Him. After hearing the gods' plea and receiving Lord Rama's blessing, Hanuman accepted the responsibility of protecting righteousness.
It is believed that on Chaitra Purnima, which is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti, and coincidentally the birth anniversary of Kalakarmukha, Hanuman assumed his eleven-faced (Ekadash Mukhi) form to fulfill the condition of Brahma's boon. When Kalakarmukha learned of this, he attacked Hanuman with his massive army. Enraged, Hanuman destroyed the demon's forces within moments. Finally, he seized Kalakarmukha, carried him high into the sky, and slew him, restoring peace and protecting the gods.
The east-facing form of Hanuman is worshipped in his Vanara (monkey) form. This manifestation is believed to possess immense strength, with a brilliance said to rival millions of suns.
