During the Navratri Festival (9 days dedicated to Goddess Durga), 9 incarnations of Goddess Durga are worshipped. The 1st of them being Maa Shailputri. Shailputri Devi is worshipped on the 1st day of Navratri Festival. She is described as holding a Lotus flower in her Left hand and a Trishul in her Right hand. Her forehead is decorated by Half Moon and a Bull Nandi is said to be her Vaahan (vehicle). The word Shailputri comprises two words, "Shail" which means Mountain, and "Putri" means Daughter. This incarnation of Goddess Durga was born to the King of Himalayas, and hence the name Shailputri.
Shailputri is also known as Goddess Parvati, who was married to Lord Shiva and is the mother of Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha. She is considered to be mother nature, who looks after all the living things, including Human beings, Animals, Trees and everyone else. As per ancient vedic texts, Maa Shailpootri was Devi Sati, daughter of Daksh Prajapati, in her past life. She got married to Lord Shiva, whom her father did not like. Once Daksh Prajapati held a Maha Yagya, where he invited all the Divine Gods and Goddesses, except for Lord Shiva and Daughter Sati. Even then, Devi Sati went to her father's yagya, against the wishes of Lord Shiva, where she was badly humiliated by her father, who also insulted Lord Shiva. Infuriated by her father's behaviour, Devi Sati immolated herself in the Yagya's Fire, and thereafter she was born to the Himalayan King Hemavat in her next life as Devi Parvati.
