Information about Guru Purnima Puja & Homam
In Sanskrit language, the word "Guru" means someone who removes the darkness of Ignorance from his disciples and moves them towards the path of enlightenment. The day of Guru Purnima is dedicated to a person who can bring real Peace & Happiness to his followers by his Knowledge, Wisdom and Teachings. On this day, people offer their gratitude to their Guru for guiding them through the path of life. Such is the importance of Guru that not only human beings but even the Gods ( Devtas ) need the guidance and blessings of a Guru and hence, the name Dev Guru has been assigned to Brihaspati (Jupiter).

Guru Poornima is celebrated on the full Moon day of the month of Ashaadh ( July-August ). It is believed that Lord Shiva communicated the Yogic Sciences to the Saptrishis ( the celebrated seven sages ) on this day & therefore Lord Shiva is also known as Adi Guru.

According to some Ancient Vedic Texts, Lord Krishna who was an Incarnation of Lord Vishnu is also considered as the Universal Guru or the Jagat Guru as mentioned below :
वसुदेव-सुतं देवं कंस-चाणूर-मर्दनम् |
देवकी-परमानन्दं कृष्णं वन्दे जगद्गुरुम् ||

Vasudeva-sutam devam kansa-chanura-mardanam |
Devaki-parmanandam Krishnam Vande Jagad-gurum ||

To the Son of Vasudeva, to the God, to the killer of Kansa and Chanura |
To the utter bliss of Devaki, to Krishna, praise, to the Universal Guru ||

This day is also supposed to be the Birth Anniversary of Sage Veda Vyasa who was the writer of great Epic Mahabharata & also the compiler of Four Vedas.

It is believed that any person who offers prayers to his Guru on this day gets the blessings of all the Gods of Trinity that is Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh (Shiva) as mentioned below :
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुर्साक्षात्‍परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवेनमः॥

Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Lord Maheshwar (Shiva) ।
Guru is the personification of the Supreme Power, I bow to the holy Guru in homage ||
